| All our work is carried out "Jua Kali" i.e.. in the open. We use traditional tools, no electricity, and only local labour from the nearby village. At present we employ more than 20 staff members. They are all local village members who walk or cycle to work. |
All the materials we use are found in the surrounding area. This neem tree root was extracted by hand from the nearby Shimba Hills to make way for a new road. A few years of drying and a few more years of carving and it
ill become a unique table. A real one off!
| Sometimes you need lots of power to remove old roots. The materials necessary for our workshop can be very large, very heavy and sometimes quite a distance from home. This
35 year old Berliet ex-French military 18 tonne 6x6 truck was made for the job. We have a five tonne winch front and back to retrieve chosen pieces from even the most difficult of
terrain or distant beach. |
It is often difficult to envisage a finished piece when you see them like this. This mvule (African Teak, or Iroko) root had been in the ground a long time and took weeks of work in the bush to dislodge it.
